One of the leading bodies representing independent prep schools in the UK has been asked by the Conservative party to advise on their plans for state funded ‘free schools’. The Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) has met the shadow education secretary Michael Gove, to help discuss how it’s expertise could help the Conservatives win the next election.

New Model Schools – a model for the future?

An article in today’s Telegraph explores two of the three schools of the New Model Schools (NMS) company, “a not-for-profit chain of independent schools owned and run by Civitas”. The group’s Maple Walk school in Willesden, the article claims, “ticks every box for the aspirant parent who despairs of the limitations of the primary state sector but who can’t afford the independent one.”

However, the realities of the model as a system for imitation may require some scrutiny, particularly in the light of mtm’s recently published Independent Education Sector Report 2010.

New standards to protect British schools abroad

With increasing numbers of ‘British Schools’ abroad, including  public school sister schools such as Roedean in South Africa, there is an increasing need to protect brand images. The Organisation which represents UK schools abroad has welcomed a set of plans for government approved standards, expected to be announced, which will reassure parents whilst improving the ‘brand’ of British education abroad.

State sectors gifted kids could boost public schools

London’s leading official for ‘gifted and talented’ children stated that state school teachers can offer a lot to their independent counterparts, as bright pupils are often better catered for by them. The Gifted and Talented project was set up with the aim of tackling social disadvantage through aspirational lessons, helping pupils become more academic, motivated and encouraged to progress on to further education. Ian Warwick, director of the capitals ‘gifted and talented’ scheme explained how state teachers have taught independent school peers to help pupils become more open minded, without spoon feeding pupils facts.
